A single coat won't cut it
Finish
Tile, topping, or wearing surface. It's what you see and walk on — but it isn't the waterproofing. The system underneath is what keeps water out.
Protection layer
Shields the membrane from damage once the finish goes on above it. Without it, the layer doing the real work takes every screw, boot, and point load.
Membrane
The waterproof layer itself, carried across the floor and turned up the wall as an upstand. Chosen for the exposure and movement it has to handle — and only as good as its detailing.
Reinforcement
Extra reinforcement worked into the corner where floor meets wall - the junction most likely to move and crack. This is where waterproofing is won or lost.
Drainage
The surface is set to fall toward the outlet, so water is carried off rather than left to pool. Drainage is part of the system, not a fitting added at the end.
Base substrate
The structure underneath, prepared and primed so the membrane bonds to it. Its condition and falls are set first — everything above depends on the base being right.

A protection layer shields the membrane once it's down, and falls and drainage carry water off before it can pool.
Water finds the weakest detail, not the widest surface. That's why the edges, upstands, and penetrations matter more than the open field.
