A coating is a thin layer with a big job. It protects the surface underneath (sealing it, and guarding against wear, chemicals, and corrosion) and it sets how that surface looks, from a plain industrial seal to a decorative finish you'd put on show. Which coating goes where depends on two questions: what it's protecting against, and what it needs to look like when it's done.
A floor in a chemical store and a floor in a showroom might use resin systems from the same family — but specified completely differently, because they're solving different problems on the same kind of surface. The surface underneath decides as much as the finish on top. Concrete, steel, and masonry each prime and bond differently, so the coating is matched to the substrate as much as to the look.
